
Calcium Supplementation
What calcium supplementation means for dogs and cats, why the calcium-to-phosphorus balance matters, and when too much or too little becomes dangerous.

Calcium does more than build bone. It keeps nerves firing, muscles contracting, and the heart beating steadily, so both a shortfall and an excess can make a pet seriously unwell. In veterinary medicine, calcium supplementation means giving calcium by mouth or injection to correct a deficiency, manage a sudden emergency such as eclampsia during lactation, or balance a home-prepared diet. The important thing to understand is that calcium is a balancing act, and the safe amount depends heavily on the pet's age, species, and situation.
Commercial pet foods are formulated with calcium carefully matched to phosphorus. The European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF) describes a healthy calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of roughly 1.1:1 to 1.5:1, with an upper limit around 1.8:1 depending on life stage. Problems usually start when owners feed homemade diets that are not properly balanced. The WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines single out unformulated home-prepared diets as a major risk for severe nutrient imbalances. Boneless meat, whether raw or cooked, is high in phosphorus and almost free of calcium, which can drag the ratio as low as 0.1:1. The MSD Veterinary Manual explains that when a pet gets too little calcium over time, the body releases extra parathyroid hormone to pull calcium out of bone and keep blood levels normal. Left unchecked, that leaves bones thin, painful, and prone to fractures. This is also why a normal calcium result on routine bloodwork is not reassuring on its own. The Whole Dog Journal notes that the body borrows from the skeleton to hold blood calcium steady, so bones can be weakening behind a normal-looking result. In a real emergency, veterinarians measure ionized calcium, the active form, rather than the total calcium shown on a standard panel.
Excess calcium is a different but equally real risk. The Purina Institute reports that growing puppies, especially large and giant breeds under 12 months, cannot scale back calcium absorption well when their intake is high. Extra calcium does not make them grow bigger or stronger, because adult size is set by genetics, and oversupplementing can damage developing joint cartilage and cause painful bone and joint problems as the puppy grows.
Pregnancy is where the risk is easiest to misunderstand. Veterinary research by Dr. Margaret Root Kustritz cautions against giving pregnant dogs calcium before whelping. Oral calcium during pregnancy can suppress parathyroid hormone, leaving the mother unable to release her own bone calcium when milk production suddenly demands it, which raises the risk of eclampsia after birth. Eclampsia, also called puerperal tetany, is a life-threatening drop in blood calcium that most often affects small-breed dogs nursing large litters about one to four weeks after whelping. Early warning signs include:
- restlessness and heavy panting
- rubbing the face and a stiff, unsteady gait
- muscle tremors, fever, seizures, or collapse as it progresses
Eclampsia is an emergency. Treatment begins with slow intravenous calcium while the heart is monitored, then moves to oral calcium while the mother continues nursing.
Cats get eclampsia far less often than dogs, but they are more prone to a persistently high blood calcium with no clear underlying cause, so the rules are not the same across species. Treat calcium as a medication rather than a general supplement. Before adding it to a home-prepared diet or giving it to a growing puppy, a pregnant dog, or a nursing mother, talk with your veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist.
