On January 5th, the new year began for us with our mare Shirin suffering from colic. From early morning, we were in contact with the clinic because she refused to eat or drink, which is very unusual for her. After a visit from the vet to the stable, no improvement, and many walks in the indoor arena, we took her to the clinic on the vet's advice. We received a competent welcome, and Shirin underwent a thorough examination. Then, eventually, came the diagnosis: without surgery, she likely wouldn't make it through the night. The vet showed and explained everything to me in great detail. It was a shock for us: colic surgery had always been out of the question for us. We imagined it would be so expensive... the horse would never be the same again... it would take forever... we didn't have surgical insurance... and so on. After careful consultation and considering how stable our mare seemed, we decided to go ahead with the surgery. The entire clinic team provided us with both expert and emotional support. From the very beginning, they were very open with us about the risks and opportunities, costs, duration, and so on. It was also made very clear that they would support any decision we made and would do everything possible to save her, even without surgery. Then came the surgery: We were able to use the waiting room that evening to be close by. Ms. Fischer, who has known our Shirin for a very long time, kept us constantly updated and checked in on her during surgery! Thank you so much for that! Then, finally, the relieving news! Her intestines could be saved… that was a huge relief. We then drove home and later received a call from the vet himself to say that the surgery was over and she just had to get up, which apparently wasn't easy either. I also received a call back about that, and I was able to sleep peacefully. The next day was a public holiday – but we still received a photo of our horse via WhatsApp early in the morning, followed by a call after the doctor's visit – what service! We were so happy that we were able to visit her right away! Over the next few days, we consistently received the agreed-upon updates. I could always ask questions, visit Shirin, and all my questions were answered. We always felt confident that Shirin was in good hands. And another important point: after a few days, the vet informed me that I could inquire about the current costs at reception at any time. It's simply a given that a 5-hour surgery will incur costs. I was pleasantly surprised that even when I picked up my mare, the total was still less than the initial estimate. So, no cost surprises, just complete transparency about everything that had been done! Even in the first few days at home, the vet assured me that I could call anytime if Shirin started acting strangely! The staples were removed in the stable… completely without any problems! Many thanks to Ms. Fischer and the entire clinic team for everything! Today marks exactly one month, and we can now take Shirin for a short walk in the indoor arena. The belly stitches look great and the fur is already growing back! Best regards, Nicole Dietrich

I would especially like to thank Dr. Mereu, who provided me with excellent information and also performed the surgery on my horse.
