How proper air exchange, temperature, humidity, and spatial layout in pet housing protect respiratory health and reduce disease spread.

When pets spend time in enclosed spaces — whether that is a shelter kennel, a breeding facility, a boarding cattery, or even a room at home where several animals stay — the air they breathe matters more than most owners realise. Good ventilation is not just about keeping things smelling fresh. It directly affects respiratory health, immune function, and the likelihood of infectious disease spreading between animals.

Ventilation in animal housing removes excess heat and humidity, clears away odours, and dilutes airborne microbes and pollutant gases. Two of the most concerning gases are ammonia, which rises from urine and settles near the floor where pets breathe, and carbon dioxide, which accumulates in stuffy, poorly ventilated spaces. When these gases build up, they irritate the delicate lining of the respiratory tract, leaving animals more vulnerable to infections like feline upper respiratory disease or canine infectious respiratory disease complex.

The Association of Shelter Veterinarians draws a useful distinction between the macroenvironment — the room as a whole — and the microenvironment, which is the immediate enclosure or cage. Both matter, and problems in one cannot always be fixed by improving the other. A well-ventilated room can still have stagnant pockets at cage level if air does not circulate properly through individual enclosures.

Veterinary guidance suggests that ten to twenty complete room air changes per hour provide adequate ventilation for most animal housing. Carbon dioxide monitors offer a practical way to check whether a space is breathing properly: keeping CO₂ at or below eight hundred parts per million generally indicates sufficient air exchange. Humidity also plays a role, with a relative humidity between forty and sixty percent helping respiratory defences work well while reducing how long airborne pathogens survive.

Different species have different needs, and getting this wrong can cause real harm. Cats prefer warmer ambient temperatures than dogs or humans, with shelter guidelines recommending roughly fifteen to twenty-seven degrees Celsius for feline housing. They also spread respiratory viruses differently from what many people assume. Research has shown that cats do not readily aerosolise pathogens; feline respiratory viruses travel mainly in heavy droplets that fall within a short radius. Placing cat enclosures at least one point two metres apart is usually enough to prevent droplet transmission between cages. For feline housing, spatial layout can be just as important as air exchange rates.

For dogs, German animal welfare law highlights temperature control as a specific legal obligation. The Tierschutz-Hundeverordnung requires adequate fresh air and safe temperatures in any space where a dog is left unsupervised, and its breeding provisions specify that whelping box resting areas must stay above eighteen degrees Celsius during a puppy's first two weeks of life.

A few common mistakes are worth knowing about. High-powered ventilation cannot compensate for overcrowding, poor sanitation, or infrequent cleaning. Exhaust-only systems that pull air out without bringing fresh filtered air in can create negative pressure, drawing contaminated air from dirty or isolation areas into clean zones. And despite marketing claims, ozone-generating air purifiers should never be used around animals: ozone is a serious respiratory irritant that damages the airway lining.

For any multi-pet setting, good housing and ventilation means thinking about all of it together — air exchange, temperature, humidity, filtration, and the physical layout of enclosures. The goal is straightforward: air that keeps pets' respiratory tracts healthy rather than working against them.
