A week ago, we had to bring our dog, Czakra, to your practice at night because she was experiencing acute respiratory distress. The examination revealed only water in her lungs. She subsequently received an injection costing €215. However, a thorough examination—such as further diagnostics, an ultrasound, or immediate referral to a suitable clinic—was not performed. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and just ten hours later, Czakra had to be euthanized in great pain. I believe that a more comprehensive examination and a faster referral to a specialized facility might have spared our dog unnecessary suffering.

In the spring, our cat was ill and refused to eat. However, a home visit was possible over the weekend, costing around €400. Water was detected in his lungs, he was given a restorative injection, and medication for his heart and water was left behind. However, the doctor was unable to take a blood sample for further diagnosis, and further treatment options were also rather poor. During a second visit a few days later, costing around €200 (including approximately €50 for medication), the very friendly young doctor was again unable to take a blood sample. She was unable to check his ear for diabetes or obtain a proper blood sample for a complete blood count, which might have revealed the kidney defect, which was relevant at the time, in a more treatable state. The doctor didn't consider the possibility of sedating him with a tablet or injection for a blood sample. Since the cat was feeling somewhat better, the treatment suggestion was to continue with heart and water tablets, as he would need them permanently due to suspected heart failure. We had to call several times to get a follow-up prescription. So we were ultimately left without a useful diagnosis and lost time in the treatment for the kidney defect. All in all, given the relatively high costs, it's not very binding, unfortunately. I would expect a doctor to take more responsibility in this context. The owners are, after all, medical laypeople, and only later do we regret not having contacted other doctors sooner, who would have potentially also tested the blood and made a better diagnosis. This leaves us with the unpleasant feeling of not having exhausted the therapeutic potential.

On January 4, 2026, I was looking for a veterinarian who made house calls. My almost 19-year-old cat, Irie, had apparently suffered several strokes some time before and his health deteriorated rapidly. He also aged abruptly. He went blind, lost his hearing, his jumping ability diminished, etc. The evening before, he most likely had another seizure. From then on, his behavior changed. Irie no longer jumped on the bed/couch, he was very confused and paced restlessly around the apartment, eventually turning away from me. He also stopped eating, got his head stuck everywhere, and almost strangled himself. He couldn't even find his litter box anymore. Ms. Kiez first advised me over the phone. I was crying uncontrollably and could barely speak. She was very patient and asked if I was alone in making the decision to have my cat euthanized, or if I had trusted people around me. I found that very compassionate, responsible, and considerate. After consulting with my family at home, I arranged an appointment for that same evening. Ms. Kiez called beforehand to say she was on her way. She was incredibly caring, respectful, and very considerate during the visit. She explained all the steps, examined my cat, and repeatedly confirmed that Irie should be euthanized. My father was with me for support. The euthanasia process was characterized by harmony, empathy, and warmth. Ms. Kiez radiated a very compassionate calm. She inquired about our personal wishes and respected them. She also answered every question we had. At 8:43 p.m., she pronounced him dead. I couldn't have imagined a more beautiful farewell for my old cat, even though I personally, with all my heart, had wished for a different outcome. I am truly grateful to Ms. Kiez for making the house call, which she did despite it being her day off, to provide us with such heartfelt guidance and support. I highly recommend Ms. Kiez—especially for euthanasia cases. She really has a heart for this. That allowed us to say goodbye to Irie in peace and bury him with dignity the following day. I miss my Irie so much.
