We were looking for a veterinarian in the area on a Friday afternoon. Dr. Hoeksma, despite her practice being closed, saw us immediately and helped us. She took a lot of time to understand our situation and was incredibly kind and helpful. Thank you so much!

I had to have my beloved 17-year-old Chihuahua euthanized under extremely distressing circumstances as an emergency case. What still troubles me is whether the severity of her illnesses was adequately considered. According to the veterinary clinic, she suffered from a severe gallbladder mucocele with an explicit written warning that her gallbladder could rupture at any time. In addition, she had tumors, and her kidneys and liver were already failing. At home, she showed clear signs of suffering: pain, restlessness at night, excessive thirst, and daily morning gagging. Out of concern for her well-being, I wanted to arrange for euthanasia at home so that my Mona could pass away peacefully in her familiar surroundings. Since this wasn't possible, I took her to this clinic because it was very quiet and I wanted to at least give her a peaceful and dignified farewell. Instead, I was told that she wasn't ready yet. Since she was still walking and seemed alert at the vet's office, my assessment of her quality of life wasn't given sufficient consideration, in my opinion. Instead, I felt I had to justify my desire to spare her further suffering. Instead of addressing the serious diagnoses, my Mona received a Librela injection to alleviate joint pain. I was left wondering what benefit this could possibly have given her known serious organ diseases. Just three days later, my dog ​​suffered a severe seizure, screamed in pain, and collapsed. The subsequent euthanasia at the emergency clinic was extremely distressing due to her already critical condition. They had to attempt to establish intravenous access several times. It was very difficult for me to watch my little dog endure this additional stress in her final moments and then be muzzled. Looking back, what saddens me most is that, in my view, the welfare of a 17-year-old dog with such serious diagnoses and significant symptoms wasn't given greater priority. For me, responsibility towards a beloved animal also means recognizing when further suffering can no longer be prevented. I am writing this not out of anger, but out of deep sorrow. My wish was to give my loyal companion a peaceful and dignified farewell. Unfortunately, that is precisely what did not happen.
