I had to see the on-call vet, Dr. von Vietinghoff. It was indeed an emergency; the dog had to be euthanized. There was a lot of back and forth on the phone... until it was established that we had an emergency at home. But first and foremost, the payment had to be sorted out... What the minimum cost would be. It felt like a deterrent. Oh well... they must have had their experiences. I hope for more empathy for all other animals and their owners. Maybe it was the time of day... But we certainly wouldn't choose her as a vet voluntarily; we didn't feel welcome. The vet tech was absolutely lovely.
My cat got sick just before Christmas and vomited every day. My vet was already on vacation. I called to see if I could come in, but there was no chance two days before Christmas. They told me I'd have to drive to Greifswald with a sick cat, for whom car rides are even more stressful. This wasn't the case in the old days; people used to try and help. You don't go to the vet out of boredom and plan it so it has to be right before Christmas. The animal is sick and needs help. It seems all vets are only interested in making money now and no longer do it out of a sense of duty or to help. The costs have also become so high that keeping a pet or having it treated is a luxury. Yes, they're only human, but what are you supposed to do when your pet is sick?
I've taken my hamsters to the practice a few times and have always left satisfied. Like most vets, their focus is on small animals (dogs and cats) and not small mammals (guinea pigs, rats, mice, etc.). But they do what they can, know their limitations, and communicate them clearly! When needed, they've even recommended a vet who specializes in a particular area. That's the kind of advice I want! I've rarely experienced that at other practices. Plus, the whole team is always very friendly.
