Kleintierpraxis Dr. med. vet. Detlef Ullrich

I have hesitated for a long time about writing this review because it is painful to think about. We brought my cat in for a tooth extraction, which Dr. Detlef dutifully performed. He is clearly a competent vet. The issue is whether his practice is caring and compassionate. When we picked my 12 year old cat up after the surgery, she was a complete wreck. She had peed herself in recovery. She had been left in a cage with hard surfaces and nowhere to relieve herself. She was cold and wet. It was very clear that she was traumatized and had not been adequately cared for during her recovery. I have never seen her so upset. I’d like to add that this is the 4th time in her life that she has had surgery, so I was accustomed to a certain standard (a cage with blankets, heater, pain meds). Dr. Detlef then told us that my cat had been difficult and combative with them, which made complete sense to me, given what they put her through. When I asked Dr. Detlef about post-op pain medication, he balked and told us that pain is no big deal and she would be fine. This goes against the science and is not the standard of care that I want for my cat. I had to literally beg him for meds. I am from the United States and it’s true that we might have different standards of care for pain management and post-op recovery at the vet’s office, but I would not wish the treatment my cat received on any living creature. My cat was also battling a slow-growing cancer at the time, so keeping her stress to a minimum was something that was important for her health. That clearly did not happen. Take your animals to Dr Detlef for routine care, but be VERY careful about having him and his team perform surgery on your animals. After this awful experience, we found an amazing vet at the university clinic for small animals.

The vet is super friendly with my cat, has patience and takes his time to explain everything in detail. It feels like he cares for his patients

We had to take our beloved old dog to Dr. Ullrich. We've only been in Germany for 1 year and he spoke very good English for us and explained everything really well. He was professional and very respectful. We unfortunately had to let our beloved go to sleep but Dr. Ullrich made the process a little bit easier by being very professional but still warm and respectful and giving us all the time we needed with her. Thank you.

I've been taking my dogs to this vet for about 40 years. He's helped me through many difficult times with my dogs. And now I can say with a clear conscience: there are few better.
