House calls across the Emden, Aurich, Leer area
Since 2004, the veterinary practice of Dr. med. vet. Thomas Dirks in downtown Emden has been caring for dogs, cats, and horses. A key focus is on surgery: soft tissue and bone operations, cruciate ligament replacements, TPLO, and fracture management are part of the practice's everyday work. For diagnostics, a digital X-ray system, ultrasound with cardiac diagnostics, ECG, and an in-house laboratory that creates blood panels immediately are ready for use. Surgeries are performed in the practice's own suite under inhalation anesthesia, which is continuously monitored; an animal ward and a spacious waiting room are also available. When the weather is nice, you can wait outside the practice with a view of the Burgplatz.

Reviews
There is by far no better veterinarian. I live in the South of France, and after a long and frustrating journey from one vet to another animal hospital in France, where no one could figure out why my dog was so ill, I made the long trip to see Dr. Dirks. After a thorough examination, he actually found the cause and was able to help my dog. Dr. Dirks is very solution-oriented and embraces the challenges of unusual illnesses. His staff is very kind and caring towards both animals and their owners. The 1300 km round trip was definitely worth it. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Dirks and his team.
Very nice vet. Prices are reasonable. The vet takes his time and explains everything well. He can also speak English and Dutch.
Excellent veterinarian. Our dog's surgery went perfectly. Thank you to Dr. Dirks and his great team.
We are very satisfied with him. We've been going to him since he opened his practice in 2004 and have never had any problems with him; he has always been a great help to our animals. Especially with our current cat, who has struvite stones. He was treated immediately with emergency surgery and is doing much better. If there were more stars, I would give him even more. ❤️
We visited your medical practice on December 8th, 2025, and sadly had to say goodbye to our dog, Georgi. In this already very difficult situation, we found it extremely disconcerting that the young medical assistants in the next room were laughing loudly and continuously, clearly having a great time. At such a moment, we would have appreciated a bit more empathy, decency, and consideration. We understand that it is generally difficult to find good staff. Nevertheless, there are limits – and in this case, in our opinion, they were clearly exceeded.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The practice treats torn cruciate ligaments in three ways: with an artificial ligament in dogs under 30 kilograms, with a tibial plateau leveling procedure known as TPLO, or by correcting the kneecap position in cases of patellar luxation.
Procedures are performed under inhalation anesthesia. Heart rate, oxygen saturation, and carbon dioxide levels are continuously measured during the process, so the anesthesia can be adjusted at any time.
Yes, the practice works with its own laboratory. Comprehensive blood panels and other immediate blood tests are processed right on site, as are urinalyses, fungus tests, and rapid parasitological tests.
Yes, the practice administers the practical and theoretical Lower Saxony dog handler's license, and the DOQ test is also available. Both veterinarians are authorized examiners.
Yes. Equipped with an SUV and a veterinary mobile pharmacy, the practice travels to horses and for other home visits and is listed for providing medical coverage at equestrian events in the region.
Yes, consultations and treatment can also be conducted in East Frisian Low German upon request.
