We took our six-month-old kitten, who was limping badly on his right front leg after a fall, to Dr. Schmittnägel's vet today. We were able to get an X-ray at short notice, and I must say it's really rare to find someone who takes so much time to discuss and explain the images, which is far from standard practice these days. It puts you at ease a lot of your mind, and you feel very well cared for, especially since the diagnosis wasn't nearly as dire as the one from another vet who didn't even bother to take X-rays.
Excellent practice with a friendly team! Mr. Schmittnägel is always reachable and returns calls promptly if you leave him a message. A very skilled surgeon who knows his craft! Highly recommended!
Dear pet owner, I have only very good and positive things to say about the vet. We never have to wait long, and he's very nice. You can immediately see that he has a BIG heart for animals. And animals like him too!!! Which is also very important. My Zara runs there. And always with joy. His employee (assistant) is also a very nice and kind woman and has excellent knowledge in her field! The best veterinary practice. Highly recommended.
On December 18, 2025, I took my 9-year-old cat to Dr. Schmittnägel in Welitsch because he wasn't eating properly and didn't want to go outside, which was unusual for him. After briefly explaining what was wrong with Leo, the doctor suspected a possible bladder infection. The examination he performed was simply taking his temperature. He had a slightly elevated temperature. My cat received three injections and two medications to give him starting the following evening. I was told to monitor his urine for blood. The medications were calculated based on the scale in the waiting room, including the container. Over the weekend, my cat barely ate anything, only the wet bits from his food, and mostly drank water. On Monday, December 22, I decided to find another veterinarian, as the one in Welitsch was closed for vacation. I found one at the VET Center in Neustadt. After a brief conversation, I was told to come in immediately. Upon arriving in Neustadt, I was called in to see the vet after a short wait. After weighing him on the small animal scale, it was immediately clear that he weighed much less than in Welitsch. I was asked if they had taken blood or urine samples in Welitsch due to a suspected bladder infection. I said no, they had only taken his temperature. The vet shook her head and frowned. She said the medication had already been overdosed. She then opened my cat's mouth and said he was suffering from liver failure. I asked her how she felt about that. She said his gums were normally pink, but Leo's were already yellow. She said it was questionable whether there was anything more she could do for him. She then examined his abdomen and said something was wrong there too. She wanted to do an ultrasound, and I agreed, still hoping they could help him. After some time, they told me there was nothing more they could do for the poor thing. He had an enlarged stomach and ulcers in his stomach and intestines. With a heavy heart, I had to say goodbye to my dear Leo. They gave us plenty of time to say our goodbyes. He then fell asleep quietly and peacefully on my shoulder. Had Dr. Schmittnägel examined him properly, he should have noticed all of this on December 18th. The vet couldn't say for sure whether the liver failure was caused by the overdose, but it was a possibility. This is my personal negative experience with Dr. Schmittnägel. My experience has been that there are good veterinarians and then there are bad veterinarians. Some examine superficially, and others do it properly.
Dr. Schmittnägel is a veterinarian with a big heart; he takes his time and tries everything to help the animal. I can highly recommend his practice! The lady who works at the practice in Kronach is an angel and was a great help to me yesterday. Thank you so much for everything!
