My dog, over 14 years old and diagnosed with severe heart disease, had terrible diarrhea since Saturday. I took him to the vet's office on Monday, and Ms. J. was there. He received Novalgin intramuscularly and another medication. I returned on Tuesday because the diarrhea had worsened, and he received more Novalgin and charcoal drops. A stool sample? "No, not necessary." He had last eaten on Saturday. The dog's condition deteriorated rapidly on Wednesday, so I decided to have him euthanized. It was a very difficult decision for me, but seeing him suffer so much was unbearable; his eyes pleaded for relief. Diarrhea day and night, along with his heart-related cough, the pain he was in was unbearable. His abdomen had become distended, and everything he ate came right back up. So I made an appointment for him to be euthanized. Ms. J. was there again. The dog was visibly in poor condition. The dog was clearly in bad shape. It was a very difficult decision for me, but seeing him suffer so much was unbearable. "I'm not going to euthanize your dog, he's still healthy. We'll do a blood test and some other examinations." When I pointed out that it was Maundy Thursday, Easter was just around the corner, and the dog was in severe pain and suffering from diarrhea, wasn't eating, was coughing, and was clearly distressed, she said she was "disappointed in me." As if I would recklessly decide to euthanize my dog, whom I've had for 14 years. At that point, I fled the vet's office with my dog. Another vet, whom I contacted in desperation, immediately recognized his poor condition. Based on his abdominal girth, they suspect tumors in his abdomen, his heart is too weak for any kind of examination, and it's obvious he's in a lot of pain. To be accused of wanting to euthanize my beloved dog unnecessarily and of being "disappointed in me" really hurt me. I think someone was just trying to make money off us. I had said that his heart was too weak for any kind of therapy and that I didn't want to put him through such a procedure; he's over 14 years old. This dog was my soulmate, my everything, my sunshine, and my anchor in life. The fact that they're still pursuing further tests is outrageous. That the dog is in pain and suffering is irrelevant and apparently didn't matter. It's all about making money, no matter what, not about the animal itself.
